A brow lift, also called a forehead lift, is a surgical procedure that improves low placement or sagging of the brows and minimizes the appearance of lines and creases in the forehead. Overactive muscles, heredity and age are all factors that contribute to these bothersome expression lines and drooping that make one appear older, tired, sad or even angry. Dr. Taylor indicates that a high arched brow is a sign of youth and has found that many women pluck or wax their eyebrows in order to achieve this look. However, a browlift is an option to be considered to restore this youthful and relaxed look, often taking a decade off one’s appearance.
Brow surgery can be performed endoscopically through small incisions hidden within the hairline. This allows the tissue and muscle beneath the skin to be repositioned, altered or removed, correcting the source of visible creases and furrows. Dr. Taylor uses Endotines, small dissolvable implants, to anchor and support the lifted brow. This technique may be done in conjunction with incisions hidden within the natural crease of the upper eyelids to correct frown lines between the brows. Skin resurfacing or chemical peels may further improve skin tone and appearance.
The brow lift procedure generally takes about 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia in a fully accredited hospital or surgical facility. The forehead is taped and wrapped after the surgery to minimize swelling and bruising. Initial healing may also include some numbness and discomfort that can be controlled with prescribed oral medication. Antibiotics are also taken to prevent infection. An itchy scalp, particularly at the incision sites, is also common. Some facial movements may be restricted or temporarily impaired.
Dr. Taylor recommends that the head is kept elevated at all times until initial swelling has subsided. Light, normal activity may be resumed in about a week. In approximately two weeks, patients usually return to work and normal activities and may use cosmetics to camouflage any bruising that remains. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling resolves and incision lines fade. Sunscreen should be used until the healing process is fully complete.
If a patient has forehead grooves that are not too deep and eyebrows that just need that little lift then a non-surgical option, such as Botox Cosmetic® injections, may offer great cosmetic results.
