Labiaplasty in Middletown, NJ

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John Taylor offers labiaplasty to patients in Red Bank, NJ, who want to correct issues with their labia for hygienic, cosmetic, or functional reasons or to relieve pain and discomfort.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that trims large or asymmetric labia minora. Many women suffer from enlarged, uneven, or thick labia minora which may sometimes extend beyond the labia majora. Some women are born with this while others may develop large labia with age or after giving birth. This may cause labial irritation while conducting normal activities or may make it difficult to keep the labial area clean. In addition, it may be a source of pain during sexual intercourse, sports, and vigorous activities or even when wearing jeans or certain clothing.

This can be an embarrassing condition to discuss with a doctor or gynecologist, but there is a procedure available to help. Labiaplasty reduces large labia or reshapes uneven labia, improving their appearance and reducing associated discomfort.

Benefits of Labiaplasty

More and more women are seeking labiaplasty because the procedure offers the following benefits:

  • Relieves pain or discomfort during sex
  • Corrects the size of uneven labia minora
  • Relieves any embarrassment from having larger labia minora

How Is a Labiaplasty Performed?

Labiaplasty is usually scheduled in the hospital or surgery center after the patient has had her period. The patient receives anesthesia or IV sedation, and then Dr. Taylor trims excess labial tissue and recreates the edges of the labia with a natural-looking shape. Absorbable stitches are used which the body naturally absorbs in time, requiring no suture removal.

The procedure takes about two hours and is followed by another hour in recovery. Once complete, the results are permanent but may become stretched again as a result of pregnancy, childbirth, and sexual activity.

Preparation for Labiaplasty

Prior to your labiaplasty, Dr. Taylor will review your case and evaluate your issue. Additionally, because the procedure is considered surgery, you may be asked to have the following completed:

  • Blood work
  • Overall health check-up
  • Cessation of smoking two weeks prior to the procedure
  • Interruption of certain current medications prescribed on a daily basis
  • Break from certain over the counter medications, vitamins, and supplements at least two weeks prior to the procedure

Recovery from Labiaplasty

Antibiotic cream is applied, and post-op care involves keeping the area clean and reapplying antibiotic cream to prevent infection. There is relatively little downtime, with most patients experiencing only mild swelling and little to no discomfort. Patients return to work in a few days and may resume sexual activity in six weeks. Complications with labiaplasty are rare but can include bleeding, infection, poor healing, and labial asymmetry.

How Much Does Labiaplasty Cost?

The cost of labiaplasty may vary with each patient depending on the extent of the procedure. During your consultation, we are more than happy to go over the costs including payment options. We accept cash, checks, and most major credit cards in addition to offering financing through CareCredit®.
