Eyelid Surgery in Middletown, NJ

Drooping eyelids affect men and women as they age, making them look tired and run down no matter how well rested they are. Dr. John Taylor is a New Jersey board-certified plastic surgeon who performs eyelid surgery on patients who want a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to correct the excess skin, tissue, and fat that contribute to puffiness and bags in both upper and lower eyelids. The procedure improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Droopy skin over the eye makes a person appear sad or angry while puffiness gives the illusion of being tired. This is often not reflective of how this person feels inside. What matters is that the appearance of one’s eyes matches the way that person feels inside – youthful, vital, and alert.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is performed to reveal a more youthful, energetic appearance and offers the following benefits:

  • Eliminates a tired appearance
  • Removes puffiness of upper and lower lids
  • Smooths fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
  • Improves vision that may be impaired by sagging lids

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Dr. Taylor performs this surgery under general or light sedative anesthesia in fully accredited hospitals and surgical facilities. An incision is made within the natural crease of the upper eyelid to allow repositioning of fat deposits and tissue and removal of excess skin. This creates a rejuvenated upper eyelid contour. If the lower lid is involved, that lid is addressed by first making a trans-conjunctival incision hidden inside the lower eyelid or a skin incision just beneath the lash line in more severe cases of skin and muscle excess. Through this incision, fat is redistributed, some may be removed, and sagging muscles or lid margins are tightened.

The time needed for the procedure is highly individualized but is usually about two to three hours. The incision lines from eyelid surgery are well-concealed within the natural creases of the eyelid region.

Preparing for Eyelid Surgery

To prepare for eyelid surgery, it is important to come with a clean face free of any makeup. In addition to being given a set of preoperative instructions, you may be asked to do the following:

  • Have blood work done
  • Get an overall health check-up
  • Have a thorough eye and vision exam by your ophthalmologist
  • Stop taking medicines such as ibuprofen and aspirin as well as certain vitamins and supplements prior to the procedure
  • Stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery
  • Arrange for someone to bring you to and take you home from your procedure

Recovery from Eyelid Surgery

Patients are given prescription pain medication as well as eye drops to be used post-operatively. The results start to become apparent after about two weeks as swelling and bruising subside, revealing a smooth, better-defined eye and a rejuvenated appearance. Patients are encouraged to wear sunglasses for sunlight protection, wear glasses in place of contact lenses, and keep their head elevated during the initial healing process. Patients usually return to work after a week, at which time they can resume light activity and begin wearing contacts again. Cosmetics can camouflage any bruising or redness that remains, and diligent sun protection is essential.

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost?

The cost of eyelid surgery varies with each patient and is based on the extent of the procedure and whether it is combined with other cosmetic procedures. We can discuss costs with you during your consultation and go over payment options. We accept cash, checks, and most major credit cards along with offering financing through CareCredit®. If eyelid surgery is being done to correct any issues with your vision, your health insurance plan may cover some of the cost of the procedure. For cosmetic surgery, we ask that the full payment be made at least two weeks prior to the procedure.
