Breast Reduction in Middletown, NJ

Dr. John Taylor is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Red Bank, NJ, who performs breast reduction procedures on patients who want smaller breasts to look and feel better about themselves.

What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of disproportionately large breasts that may cause physical discomfort and pain as well as dissatisfaction with body image. Associated conditions of large breasts include back, neck, and shoulder pain; indentations from bra straps; skin irritation beneath the breast crease; and restricted physical activity. This may impair a woman’s ability to lead an active life in addition to causing emotional discomfort and self-consciousness.

Women with overly large breasts may experience the following benefits from breast reduction:

  • Relieve back and neck pain associated with carrying larger breastsBreast Reduction in Middletown, NJ

Breast Reduction Before and After Pictures

With breast reduction surgery, pain associated with carrying larger breasts is alleviated and the overall appearance is much more proportionate to the rest of the body.

How Is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

Dr. Taylor performs this outpatient procedure in approximately 4 hours under general anesthesia in fully accredited hospitals and surgical facilities. The most common approach is a keyhole incision pattern that begins around the areola and continues vertically down the breast, resulting in the so-called “lollipop incision.” In some women, a small incision under the crease of the breast is also necessary.

From there, the nipple is repositioned and, if desired, the areola reduced in size. Underlying breast tissue is reduced, lifted, and shaped. Excess fat may be removed through liposuction in conjunction with excision techniques. The incision lines result in scars that fade and improve in appearance over time.

Preparing for Breast Reduction Surgery

Women who are thinking about breast reduction should be in good physical health. Prior to the procedure, you will meet with Dr. Taylor for a pre-operative consultation where you may be asked to do the following:

  • Get a mammogram to ensure breast health
  • Get an overall health evaluation
  • Get blood work
  • Avoid taking certain over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and nutritional supplements that may thin the blood
  • Alter any medications you currently take on a consistent basis
  • Arrange for help at home in the days following your discharge from the hospital

Recovery from Breast Reduction

For most breast reduction procedures, the surgery may be done as outpatient surgery meaning you do not have to stay in the hospital. The initial healing typically includes swelling and discomfort which is controlled with prescribed oral medication. Antibiotics are also taken to prevent infection. Drainage tubes, if necessary, are removed within seven to 10 days. A support bra is worn around the clock for the first few weeks. Light walking is encouraged as soon as possible, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least six weeks. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling resolves and the breasts settle to their new position and shape.

How Much Does Breast Reduction Cost?

The cost for breast reduction surgery varies with each patient depending on the scope of the procedure. For patients with chronic pain, insurance plans may offer coverage for the surgery as it is done to correct a health issue. If it is done for cosmetic reasons, insurance typically does not cover the procedure. We accept most major credit cards as well as cash or checks, and offer financing through CareCredit®. It is important to note that for cosmetic procedures, we require full payment for the procedure at least two weeks in advance of the surgery date.
