Genital Surgery
in Middletown, NJ

Genital surgery is an integral part of the total transformation from one sex to another. Dr. John Taylor, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Red Bank, NJ, performs genital surgery on patients who want to undergo gender affirmation.

What Is Genital Surgery?

Gender surgery is the process of transitioning the genital area from one sex to another. For some patients who have a deep desire to change their gender, changing the sexual organ is a procedure that truly makes them the sex they feel they were meant to be.

For those who make the decision to change every part of their body to the desired gender, the process of genital surgery is intricate and should only be performed by a medical professional skilled in this area of medicine. Additionally, it is important that family and friends provide strong support as the process is physically and emotionally taxing.

What Are the Procedures for Genital Surgery?

Vaginoplasty

To change from male to female involves several steps to complete the process. The testicles are removed followed by inverting the foreskin and the skin around the penis to form the vagina. A flap is shaped to preserve blood and nerve supply so the vagina is fully functioning. The scrotum skin is used to form the labia.

Preparing for a Vaginoplasty

Genital surgery requires a lot of preparation to make sure that patients are mentally and emotionally prepared for all that comes with this type of surgery. Plastic surgeons often require psychological exams to be completed by psychiatrists and psychotherapists in addition to following the steps necessary to prepare for genital surgery. Prior to surgery, patients must have an overall health assessment, blood and lab work, and avoid any medications or vitamins that may thin the blood.

Recovery from Genital Surgery

Recovering from genital surgery begins in the hospital. This is an in-patient procedure that requires a hospital stay of at least three days. During the initial recovery, the goal is to get patients up and moving as well as urinating (with the help of lots of water). Once the dressings have been removed along with catheters and drains, patients are typically released from the hospital. In the days following the hospital stay, we recommend that patients relax and take it easy in order to begin the healing process. A follow up visit is scheduled about a week following the hospital release. Instructions are provided to patients for recovery and are very important to follow.
