Rhinoplasty
in Middletown, NJ

Patients in Red Bank, NJ, seek nose surgery from Dr. John Taylor, a board-certified plastic surgeon who is well-trained at performing rhinoplasty and other cosmetic facial surgery procedures.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Cosmetic surgery of the nose, known as rhinoplasty, is a procedure to improve the appearance of the nose. Specific features addressed include nose size, width, profile (humps or depressions), shape of nasal tip (enlarged, bulbous, upturned, or hooked), wide nostrils, and nasal asymmetry. These features are usually caused by heredity, but they can be a result of injury.

Rhinoplasty may also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects in the nose. When nose surgery is performed to improve breathing function in patients with obstructed airways, the procedure is considered reconstructive.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is performed for cosmetic as well as functional reasons and offers the following benefits:

  • Corrects bumps and misshapen noses
  • Reduces the size of a very large nose
  • Corrects some breathing issues
  • Corrects issues from trauma

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Dr. Taylor performs this surgery under general anesthesia in accredited hospitals and surgical centers in about one to two hours. The surgery can be performed either using a closed procedure, where incisions are hidden inside the nose, or an open procedure, where an incision is made across the columella, the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. Through these incisions, the soft tissues that cover the nose are gently raised, allowing access to reshape the contours. Once nasal structures are sculpted to the desired shape, skin and tissue are re-draped and incisions closed. Additional incisions may be placed in the natural creases of the nostrils to alter their size.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty

To prepare for rhinoplasty, it is always recommended to be in as good of health as possible as well as take steps that may be required by the doctor. Some of these steps include the following:

  • Undergo pre-operative testing
  • See your physician for medical clearance
  • Adjust or discontinue current medications
  • Take certain medications
  • Stop smoking
  • Avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain herbal supplements that may thin your blood.
  • Make travel arrangements for someone to drive you to and from surgery
  • Arrange for someone to stay with you the first night following surgery

    Recovery from Rhinoplasty

Splints and packing will likely support the nose following rhinoplasty as it begins to heal. Initial healing may include some swelling, bruising, headache, and discomfort, which is controlled with prescribed oral medication. Antibiotics are also taken to prevent infection. Swelling will subside within a few weeks, but it may take up to a year for it to fully refine. Within a couple of days, the packing is removed; however, the splint may need to be worn for an additional week or two. Most patients are ready to return to work at this time. Cosmetics can camouflage any bruising or redness that remains. Patients must protect the nose from injury during any physical activity for the following six months in addition to continuing diligent sun protection.
