What Is Microdermabrasion?

How Is Microdermabrasion Performed?
Microdermabrasion is similar to using a very fine sander to exfoliate the top layers of skin and then stimulate the new skin to grow. There are two methods to perform microdermabrasion. The first one is a handheld device with tiny crystals on the end of it that goes across the skin to remove the outer layers. As it does, a vacuum sucks the dead skin into the machine along with the crystals. The second is a more advanced method and involves a wand with a diamond-shaped tip. Audrey Fey moves the wand over the targeted area to remove dead skin. Either method results in glowing and younger-looking skin.
Each treatment takes about 20-30 minutes with no downtime for the skin to recover. Immediately following the treatment, a soothing serum and moisturizer are applied to see and feel the full effects of microdermabrasion.

Preparing for Microdermabrasion
To prepare for microdermabrasion, there are several recommendations for each patient:
- Stop smoking as it affects the outcome of microdermabrasion
- Avoid products with aspirin or salicylic acid prior to the treatments
- Avoid other skin rejuvenation treatments such as peels, waxes, and other serums that may affect the skin a week prior to treatments
- Stay out of the sun prior to the treatments
Recovery from Microdermabrasion
There is no downtime or recovery with microdermabrasion. Our skin care analyst may suggest a moisturizer to use following the treatment to ensure full benefits of the treatment.
