Breast Implants in Middletown, NJ

Dr. John Taylor, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Red Bank, NJ, has been performing breast implant surgery for 20 years on women who want to enlarge or reshape their breasts, or who have undergone a mastectomy for breast cancer.

What Are Breast Implants?

Breast implants are a type of prosthesis which improves the appearance, shape, texture, or size of a woman’s breasts. There are two main types of breast implants, saline and silicone. Each of these has its own advantages and disadvantages, which can be discussed during your consultation. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water; the implant is inserted empty and then filled with saline once safely placed inside your body. Saline implants are commonly used for breast reconstruction after breast cancer. Silicone breast implants are pre-filled with silicone, a substance that mimics human fat, before surgery.

Benefits of Breast Implants

As one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures, breast implants offer the following benefits:

  • Enhanced fullness of the breasts
  • A more proportionate figure
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Restored normal appearance to women who have had a mastectomy

How Is Breast Implant Surgery Performed?

Implant placement, type, and size will be determined based on your breast anatomy, body type, and desired size as well as Dr. Taylor’s judgment. Dr. Taylor uses your specific body measurements, along with your size preference, to choose the best implant for you. The most common incision is an inframammary incision, above the crease under the breast. Other incision patterns include axillary (in the armpit) and periareolar (around the nipple area). Once the incision has been made, a pocket is created either directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the pectoralis muscle (submuscular) for implant placement. The breast implant has a silicone shell and is filled with sterile saline or a cohesive silicone gel.

Breast surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes approximately 2 hours. It is performed on an outpatient basis, so you will be able to go home the same day.

Preparing for Breast Implant Surgery

Preparing for breast implant surgery involves several steps to ensure a successful procedure. A pre-surgery consultation is scheduled to discuss the surgery and make a decision as to the size of the desired breasts. The following steps may need to be taken as well:

  • Mammogram to make sure the breasts are healthy
  • Blood work
  • Overall health check-up
  • No smoking for a couple of weeks prior to the procedure
  • No taking aspirin or any other blood thinning medication, vitamin, or supplement

Recovery from Breast Implant Surgery

Results are immediately visible, and breasts may feel tight at first as the skin adjusts to the new breast size. After you have breast implant surgery, your breasts will be wrapped with gauze and a support bra is worn to help support and position the breasts. Expect to take it easy for several days and avoid strenuous activities for a minimum of two weeks. There will be some discomfort and soreness following your procedure. It is also typical to experience some mild bruising and redness. Using ice to help dull the soreness during the first few days after the procedure can help. Dr. Taylor will also make sure you have medication to help offset any discomfort you might experience.

Total recovery from breast implant surgery may take up to two months. You will need to wear your support bra for about two weeks after surgery, during which time you should be careful about your physical activities. The first week, expect some soreness and swelling. After two weeks, Dr. Taylor will have a post-op check-up and let you know if you are able to return to your normal activities. Over the next month, you will slowly start feeling better and the swelling will significantly decrease.

How Much Do Breast Implants Cost?

The cost of breast implants varies with each patient depending on the type and size of the desired breasts and the extent of the surgery to ensure a successful procedure. During a consultation with Dr. Taylor, we can discuss the costs involved as well as our payment options. In addition to accepting cash, checks, and most major credit cards, we offer financing through CareCredit®. Because some breast implant procedures are performed following a mastectomy, health insurance plans may offer coverage. We can help you determine if your health insurance plan provides coverage. For cosmetic procedures, we ask that the full payment be made 2 weeks prior to the procedure.

How Do I Know If Breast Implants Are Right for Me?

If you are dissatisfied with the size of your breasts or how you look in clothing styles, or if you have undergone a mastectomy, breast implants may be the right option for you.
